Food Allergen Legislation
This course is based on the requirements of the following legislation:-
Regulation 1169/2011 or the Food Information to Consumers (FIC) This Regulation sets the requirements for the information provided on food labelling. This Regulation provides for a high level of consumer protection, ensuring consumers are not misled and supporting them to make informed choices about the food they eat. This includes identifying and highlighting any of the official 14 allergens in bold for example, if they are contained in any prepacked food product.
S.I. No. 489 of 2014 From December 13th 2014, the requirement to declare the official 14 food allergens on prepacked food is extended by EU law to include non-prepacked food. EU Member States are permitted to introduce national legislation to determine how this legal requirement is put into effect within their jurisdictions, and the Department of Health has achieved this through S.I. No. 489 of 2014. In the absence of national legislation, EU labelling requirements for prepacked food automatically apply to foods sold loose (non-prepacked) This must be in a written format, easily accessible to consumers. The legislation covers all areas where non-packed food is sold, or given away voluntarily and also includes beverages.
